Welcome
The 6th Summer School on Computational Interaction was held at Saarland University in Saarbrücken, Germany. It took place between the 13th June and the 18th June 2022 (Monday through Saturday) and was organized by the Saarland Informatics Campus and the Max-Planck Institute for Informatics.
This summer school taught HCI students, researchers, and industry professionals computational methods and their application in user interface design, interactive systems, user modeling, and more. Each day featured one or two outstanding researchers who shared their expertise on a technical topic and advised attendants in practical hands-on sessions — always in relevance to HCI.
For the first time this year, on the last day, attendants got the chance to develop entrepreneurial skills and learn how to translate their research expertise into business ideas and ventures.
See below for impressions of the summer school.
Themes & Topics
We put together a remarkable program that features the leading experts in the area of computational interaction. Each day was dedicated to a specific topic and was divided into theoretical background lectures and practical hands-on exercises. For each topic there were extensive opportunities to practice the acquired knowledge and to get feedback from the instructors. See here for more details.

Our fourth day at the #cixschool22 ends with an awesome panel by @RealityLabs with the whole team telling us about the computational input methods and interfaces they are developing for XR. Really exciting stuff! pic.twitter.com/qolVwHCKRH

Day 3 of the #cixschool22 summer school @SIC_Saar @Saar_Uni. Andrew Howes is telling us about the fascinating approach of computational rationality to user modeling. Main assumption: interaction is a direct consequence of the bounds imposed by human cognition and the environment. pic.twitter.com/37iepEYX4j

Timo and Chiara from @GEntrepreneur_ teach us how to develop research ideas into business cases.I'm amazed how much of our knowledge from user-centred design we can apply but also how many of the start-up methods are applicable to research (1/n) pic.twitter.com/iLSlfxu9IO
VR is here to stay and @da_lind is arguing that the killer application is in health care. What about mixed reality? Many open challenges remaining but a key one is to make it easier for creators to develop good MR interaction.Automatic adaptation is a crucial component #cixschool22 pic.twitter.com/WnKDpi8R5R

Another fascinating guest talk at #cixschool22 by Dietrich Manstetten from @BoschResearch on Modeling people's driving behavior (with or without support from AI) and giving us an overview of the diverse HCI research Bosch is involved in. pic.twitter.com/WDzCbvt95R

Day 5 of the #cixschool22 @amrgomaaelhady trying to guess the two favorite colors of Jennifer Matthiesen. According to @oulasvirta he's approximating a function over the color space and find the optimum based on the feedback he gets from guessing, just like a bayesian optimizer. pic.twitter.com/PFf5CFGzwI

Great talk by @geri_fitz on YOUR good academic life at #cixschool22 If you don't feel mentally and physically good, we don't do good research. Define your VALUES! It is not about saying no, but about saying yes to your values, yourself, to do better research. Thanks #academia pic.twitter.com/t9JMAWQRI9
